Alien Periodic Table

Alien Periodic Table

Procedure:
**Create a periodic table of elements that has 8 groups and 5 periods.  The group aliens must be exactly the same in ONE way (the Key Similarity) and must also share one feature that changes in a periodic pattern as you move down the group (the Varying Trait).  Within each period, the aliens must be exactly  the same in ONE way (the Key Similarity) and must also share one feature that changes in a periodic pattern as you move across the period (the Varying Trait).
**Two aliens are missing from your set, leave empty spaces to draw them in later.

Questions:
1. How many groups of aliens do you have? ________
How many periods of aliens do you have? ________
2. Draw in the missing aliens and describe.                       Group ______ Period ____
Description of missing alien #1                                     Drawing of missing alien #1

(Give 5 characteristics of the alien)
    1.__________________________
    2. __________________________
    3. __________________________
    4. __________________________
    5. __________________________

Description of missing alien #2                       Drawing of missing alien #2
                                                                           Group ______ Period ____
(Give 5 characteristics of the alien)
    1.__________________________
    2. __________________________
    3. __________________________
    4. __________________________
    5. __________________________

3.  Give detailed information about your chart of aliens. Then list the Key Similarity and Varying Trait for the aliens in that group.  Be very specific about what is staying the same and changing.

Key Similarity (stays same)                      Varying Trait (changes)
Group 1                    _____________________                    _________________
Group 2                    _____________________                    _________________
Group 3                    _____________________                    _________________
Group 4                    _____________________                    _________________
Group 5                    _____________________                    _________________
Group 6                    _____________________                    _________________
Group 7                    _____________________                    _________________
Group 8                    _____________________                    _________________
Period 1                    _____________________                    __________________
Period 2                    _____________________                    __________________
Period 3                    _____________________                    __________________
Period 4                    _____________________                    __________________
Period 5                    _____________________                    __________________

4. The ‘Next’ Alien? For one group and one period…
Group number:  _____
Period number: _____
A) Describe what the ‘next’ alien might look like
B) Draw neatly what it might look like

The ‘next’ alien almost certainly has…                                     Drawing of ‘next’ alien

Thing about the ‘next’ alien we really don’t know is
________________________________________

Analyzing and Comparing Questions:
5. What do the groups of aliens have in common (how are they similar) to the groups/families of atoms on periodic table? Think about how the groups on the periodic table are similar and compare to your aliens.

6. How are the periods of the aliens in common to the periods on the periodic table? What similarities do they have?

7. Compare the alien in group 1, period 1 to the atom in group 1, period 1 (hydrogen) on the periodic table. How are they similar; compare their characteristics. Think about what are the characteristics of the hydrogen atom.
