Part 2: Calcium chloride and water
Procedure:
1. Place
your Ziploc bag on the scale and zero out the weight.
2. Place 10
grams of calcium chloride in your Ziploc bag.
3. Fill your
plastic container with 20 mL of water and close it.
4. Place the
water container in your Ziploc bag, squeeze out the air from the bag and seal
it completely.
5. Weigh the
bag and all of the contents on the scale and record in your data table.
6. Carefully
open the plastic lid to the water container WITHOUT opening the Ziploc bag.
7. Let the
water and calcium chloride react and make observations.
8. Weigh the
bag again and record the new mass of the entire bag.
9. Rinse out
the plastic container and Ziploc bag with water. Shake out the plastic bag to remove the
water.

chemical reaction.

4. How does the Law of Conservation of
Matter relate to your experiments today? Was it true for your experiments?
Summarize what happened with the mass before and after the reaction took place.
5. Assume you have 30 atoms of calcium
80 atoms of chlorine and both are mixed with water to form a new product, how
much calcium atoms and chlorine atoms would you have in the product?
6. How did your results compare with
those of other groups? Suggest possible explanations for any significant
differences that you observed.
